About the event

Visit-Workshop: Tile making in Portugal in the first half of the 16th century

The collection of the National Azulejo Museum (MNAz) offers a comprehensive journey from the late 15th century to the present day. The continued use of tiles in Portugal dates back to the reign of King Manuel I (1469–1521), a period during which a taste for tile art was established—one that remains vibrant to this day.

How did tiles become embedded in Portuguese artistic imagination? What were the key influences during this early period, and what production techniques were used at the time?

In this visit-workshop, we invite you to immerse yourself in this foundational moment in the history of Portuguese tile-making, combining theoretical insights with hands-on experience through a short guided tour followed by a painting workshop.

Visit duration: approx. 30 minutes Guided by: Dora Fernandes / MNAz

Following an introductory overview of the materials and techniques used in tile production, we will explore the Hispano-Moresque period, focusing on cuerda seca and relief-moulded (or aresta) tile techniques typical of the early 16th century.

Tile Painting Workshop: Led by Teresa Silva / MNAz

Participants will have the opportunity to apply relief-moulded and cuerda seca techniques by painting two tiles, in a practical session that complements the guided visit.

Tiles will be kiln-fired (muffle firing) and can be collected at a later date (minimum 48 hours), at the museum reception
